February Book Review
Hey, friends!
Thanks for stopping by again today. I’m so happy to share my crazy little life with you here. And today is my favorite post of the month again –
BOOK REVIEW DAY!
I read several really good books this month, so let’s get started.
Politics aside, I truly enjoyed this book. Newt Gingrich chronicals President Trump’s early life through the campaign and into his first year in the White House. This is the best and most accurate biography of him so far. I enjoy politics and American history, but if you don’t, that’s cool too.
So I had to read this one for my New Testament class – but… it was actually interesting. Real letters were found in Pergamum and the author bases the story from them. We don’t know much about the martyr Antipas mentioned in the book of Revelation, so this fictional story could possibly resemble his life. It is historical fiction, but it also includes many historical events and people during the setting of the story. It gave me a lot of the feels. How many of us would really go to the ends of the earth to stand up for Christ like this?
I love Lisa Harper’s books and Bible studies, so I was excited to dig into her newest one. Lisa shares many stories of her struggles to adopt her little girl from Haiti among other personal issues. She’s one of those authors you just know you could be friends with. In this book, we learn that it’s ok to want to be happy. That God wants us to be happy. Happiness is a spiritual emotion, and Christ followers are called to happiness. Such a sweet read.
I downloaded this book to my Kindle quite a long time ago and just never got around to reading it. I’ve always liked Drew Barrymore, and I enjoyed reading this one over lunch or while waiting around. It’s a very light read and really has no continuity. The stories hop around from time to time over her life. They aren’t chronological. It kinda reads like she just wrote a chapter as they popped into her head. It’s cute for a one time read, especially if you’re a fan.
I’ve never read (or really even heard of) Lisa Whittle before one of Annie Downs’s podcasts. This book is very holy. You need to be in the right spiritual place to truly want more of God – more than anything else. If you have trouble prioritizing God and his mission over others (And I mean she will call you out on it – if you’re a mom that is defined by your husband and children, or your life/schedule is all revolving around your kids, you better be ready. She really will put you in your place.) then this book may step on your toes. I Want God is meant to be deep and thought provoking. You’ll be ready to sacrifice it all.
Veronica Mars: The Thousand Dollar Tan Line
I never watched Veronica Mars the TV show, but I was curious about the book. It popped up on Audible as something I might like (Audible and Amazon have sold me way too many books that way!), so I downloaded it. I really enjoyed it! It kept me attentive the whole time, and I actually looked forward to my drives to listen to it more! It’s definitely a mystery, but it’s not a thriller. I think most all of you would enjoy it.
I mentioned last month that I wanted to reread some of my books. Last year I reread the Pretty Little Liars series and half of the Women’s Murder Club. This year I’ve started Nancy Drew. Yes, these books are for younger audiences, but I love them! I have so many memories wrapped up in these books. Both my mother and grandmother were fans of Nancy Drew in their day, so I inheirited a bunch from them and have purchased even more through my childhood and teen years. I don’t read any of the newer spinoff series (Clue Crew, Girl Detective, etc.) Just the original Nancy Drews – 175 in all. This month I read the first four!
Do you have any old favorites you like to read now and then? How about any new books I should add to my stack? I have Jud looking at bookshelf designs to build me a “library” room. I guess books are one of the few hobbies I have always enjoyed and can’t part with. I only have around 500 or so…
Have a good one!
