Mystery Trips
My church’s senior adult group often takes “mystery trips”. They show up to the church, board the bus, and they’re carted off to surprise destinations around Central Mississippi. Some outings revolve around food, some cultural events, some just random fun.
I wish I could go on those outings! So I started thinking about how I could incorporate surprise destinations into Liam’s routine. These are NOT big travel plans. They are simple, affordable day trips. I have started using them as rewards for good behavior, obedience, and chores. So far he’s earned three! I thought it would be fun to share what we’ve been doing.
Our first mystery trip was to opening day of the dinosaur exhibit at the Mississippi Museum of Natural History.
My best pal loves dinosaurs, so when I saw this event, I knew it had to be a mystery trip.
There were many outdoor exhibits, some that kids could climb on.
Others were inside, especially the ones with info on the specific dinosaur. But we also toured the Natural Science Museum too. Liam had not been there since he was a very small toddler, so he didn’t remember much. It was all new to him.
The famous two-headed snake. And yes, it’s alive. He’s been there for many years and still gives me the creeps. Both heads eat. Yuck.
Most people who see this sign, especially in July, would go the other way. Not Liam…
In typical JC style, I walked around and had conversations with the taxidermy.
I just love this boy so much! There is truly no one I would rather spend time with. We always have the best adventures!
I hope this post inspires you to get imaginative on new ways to incorporate fun and rewards for good behavior. Yes, good behavior should be expected continuously and not rewarded for every little thing. I do this instead of allowance money, it gets him out and away from devices, it’s educational and a bonding experience for us. I am all about the memories. Don’t wait till tragedy strikes you to make intentional memories. You’ll be thankful for every one of these moments too!
