August Book Review
Hey, hey! It’s BOOK REVIEW day!
Y’all I am so excited to share my August reads with you today. I read five books total: 4 fiction and 1 Christian inspo, and I would recommend…the 4 fiction. Details below. I won’t post any spoilers because two of them could definitely be spoiled, so I’ll just give you a quick recap and then my thoughts. Let’s get started!
I have read several Elin Hilderbrand books over the past few years, and I have to say her writing just gets better and better. This was one of my favorites. The back cover flat out tells you that the main character, Mallory, is going to die. Don’t let that deter you though. The story covers 28 summers between Mallory and her Same Time Next Year flame. It’s political intrigue, suspense, chick lit, and romance all in one. It really makes you appreciate the ones you have.
Two authors end up living side by side in a small mountain town. They make a bet at who can sell their story first. However, the real story is how they both ended up on a lake in Michigan all alone. It’s a quick read, and I really enjoyed it. But I have no idea why it’s named Beach Read. There’s no beach, no beachy quality, no summer-esque storyline. It simply takes place over one summer. Odd title, but good book!
I really liked this one! Emily has moved to a small town in Maryland to take care of her sister and niece after they were in a devastating car accident. Her sister is badly injured, so Emily takes on a lot of her motherly duties – including chaperoning her niece over six weeks at a Renaissance Faire. Emily and her niece are both characters in the Faire storyline, but Emily uncovers a few other secrets – along with a surprising love interest. If you watched Gilmore Girls and remember Luke’s sister Liz and her huband TJ in the Renaissance Faire episodes, you will be able to picture this book easily. Now I want to go to a Renaissance Faire!
This is my second book by Aussie author North. He is an excellent storyteller, and his books are completely unique. I read this one in 24 hours because I had to know what was going to happen next. Four boys get weirdly obsessed with making nightmares come true – to the point that someone is murdered and someone goes missing. You can feel the hairs on your neck standup as you read.
Okay…so I wanted to love this book. I thought the title and synopsis sounded really compelling given the world we are in today. I know many of you can agree that 2020 sucks, but mine has really, really sucked. I listened to the Audible version, and audio listeners get extra content. However, I feel like I could have written this book. “Pause. Take a breath. Go outside. Spend time with Jesus.” Yes, I get all of that. I was looking for that something extra I suppose.
