March Book Review

Good morning! I feel like Book Reviews are the only things I’ve had to post lately. I’m deep into the semester writing a research paper for both classes. That’s enough writing to drive anyone mad, but I don’t like neglecting my blog. Here’s to April being more consistent!

I read another six books this month, including rereading a few that I read years before. I mentioned here that I have several I wanted to reread this year, so I’m working on that goal too!

Anything

Anything was a reread for me, and I am so glad I took the time to read it again! Jennie Allen strongly challenges you in the faith. If you are putting anything at all ahead of your walk with God (including your spouse and kids) she is going to call you on it! Nothing can come before your personal relationship with Him. She stepped on my toes many times, but it needed to be done. Perhaps you need the encouragement too?

Veronica Mars: Mr. Kiss and Tell

Last month I read the first Veronica Mars book, so I quickly downloaded book 2.  I have really enjoyed this series. I hope they publish more, but I know it was only a two book deal. In Mr. Kiss and Tell Veronica’s case is a complicated mix of hard facts, mysterious occurrences, and uncooperative witnesses. A hotel refuses to turn over its reservation list and the victim won’t divulge who she was meeting that night. Add in the facts that the attack happened months ago, the victim’s memory is fuzzy, and there are holes in the hotel’s surveillance system, and Veronica has a convoluted mess on her hands. As she works to fill in the missing pieces, it becomes clear that someone is lying. You’ll definitely read to the last page.

The Secret of Happiness

After Billy Graham’s death last month I wanted to read one of his books. I’ve only read two in the past. I had The Secret of Happiness on my shelf already, so I decided to dig into this one. I read The Sacrament of Happy last month, so apparently I’m feeling a theme. Billy Graham focuses on the Beatitudes as the secret of happiness.  True, lasting happiness isn’t to be found by seeking it directly. Happiness is a by-product, a bonus that comes when we seek what is really important. And the things that will bring us the satisfaction we long for are not necessarily what the world considers meaningful. A very insightful and heartfelt book.

Believing God

If you feel stuck in life and need a little motivation, may I suggest Believing God? I’ve actually read this book three times before, and I’ve done the accompanying Bible Study. It’s powerful, y’all. Is your belief system really working? God’s intention all along has been for the believer’s life to work. God meant for his children to succeed, and to do that we must actively be believing God, not just believing in Him.

Praying God’s Word

I have also read this one before years ago. I’ve been a long time reader of Beth Moore. Her Bible studies have made a great impact on my spiritual life. I’ve mentioned before that Bible study is not where I struggle. Interpretation, cross referencing with the original Greek or Hebrew, or even using commentaries has become part of the norm for me. My greatest weakness is prayer. I need resuls quickly, and prayer isn’t quick enough for me. To be still and know is not my area of expertise, so I am constantly looking for any material to better my prayer game. This book gives (a lot) of prayer examples and how to pray Scripture with minimal commentary. I will say this would be better read by book  in hand rather than Audible. I read the book years ago and just now listened to it on Audible. It’s much harder to concentrate when someone is reading prayers while you’re driving. Paper copy is the way to go with this one.

Jesus The One and Only

I was on a Beth Moore role I guess. They were each $1.99 on Audible even though I own the hardback (and Kindle too!) of each one of these books. But, oh, Jesus. Have you ever just thought about Him as a person? What it would be like to be terrestrial friends with Him? I loved this book so much. Please take the time to get to know Jesus. He will change your life.

I also read another 4 Nancy Drew books. I mentioned last month that I’m working my way through them again. They are such fun, light but suspenseful books. I’ll never grow tired of them!

Well, what did you read this month? I’d love to hear your suggestions in the comments!
