American History Road Trip Part 3

Hello, friends! Today I am sharing my final installment of my American History Road Trip. You can catch up on Part 1 here and Part 2 here. After leaving Washington DC, I headed for the one single state east of the Mississippi that I had never been to – Delaware. I wasn’t sure what to do there, but I read that Dover Air Force Base was the current home of Air Force Two. I followed that rabbit trail until Liam and I found ourselves at the Air Mobility Command Museum.

We were given a guided tour by veterans who genuinely loved each of the planes there.

There she is! This particular Air Force Two was retired after the Obama administration, so it was available for public viewing.

Mr. Liam showed off his years of Space Camp experience by flying a jet simulator. I kid you not, he landed it. Perfectly. He was handsomely rewarded for it!

He was given a set of wings and…

was allowed to go up in the air control tower at Dover AFB!

This particular aircraft literally flew the paratroopers on D-Day. The flight manifest was still on board. Most of the soldiers listed above survived!

You can literally stick your finger in the holes where they took enemy fire.

From Delaware we headed west to our final destination, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania!

And the first night… the hotel kitchen caught on fire and spread through the ground floor. I had to wake Liam up, grab our valuables, and head down the fire escape from the fifth floor with a freaked out five-year-old.

They quickly controlled the flames while we stood on the streets of inner-city Philly after midnight.

We woke the following morning to head to another bucket list destination – Liberty Hall.

This is the very room where the founding fathers – including Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, Hancock and more – drafted the Declaration of Independence, also signed by my grandfather, future President Monroe!

There she is! The Liberty Bell!

I made Liam walk up the “Rocky” steps while I sang the song, but he didn’t get the reference and thought I was nuts.

Our next excursion was the famous battlefield of Valley Forge!

The above photos are from George Washington’s headquarters still maintained today.

We then traveled over to Gettysburg, where I didn’t take a lot of photos for some reason.

Finally, we drove through Amish country to experience that culture. The food was less than spectacular to say the least…

The following day it was time to pack up and head to Baltimore for our flight home!

I absolutely loved these trips with Liam. I am a huge fan of American History. I loved seeing it all come to life and share it with my favorite guy.
