What the Bible Says About Being Overweight

I am fat.

I am ugly.

I am overweight.

It’s that time of year. You know the one. All of your friends are trying to get those “summer bodies”. I remember when a few other gals I used to work with were trying to make healthier choices (who are physically beautiful – well, inside and out) and trying to be good.

And then there’s me. I usually walk/run on my treadmill a few nights a week, and I still look like this! So frustrating! However, ladies everywhere are constantly comparing themselves to others or to unrealistic figures. Body shaming stinks. Especially when it comes from your own mouth.  Girls, we need to get a grip. We need to band together and stop the thief of comparison. It’s one of Satan’s favorite ways to destroy a woman of God. I’m not okay with that, and you shouldn’t be either!

Stop shaming yourself and comparing your figure to others. Let’s take a look at what the Bible says about being overweight

what the bible says about being overweight

And all God’s ladies said amen oh me…

It seems like I’ve been worried about my size since high school age, but I know that it’s affecting girls much younger now. Here’s the thing: Yes, I love my body, and yes, I know I am fearfully and wonderfully made. I know that inner beauty is what is to be judged. Please don’t misunderstand what I’m trying to share with you today.

{Owning it in Jamaica!}

I’m feeling pretty vulnerable right now

I’m going to let you in on a secret. I gained 42 pounds when I was pregnant with Liam. I’m shaking my head in shame. Why do I feel bad about my body when it was able to house and nourish my sweet baby for 36 long, hard weeks? I am so thankful for what it was able to do, but now…now I’m oveweight.

{26 weeks pregnant}

I managed to drop 30 pounds right away – it just fell off naturally. But I still have a little to go, and according to my BMI, I need to lose even more!

There are ads and sponsored posts popping up everywhere on social media. How do they know? I can’t wear half of my clothes. My wedding rings are still too snug. It is literally all I ever think about.

Until now.

It’s not just the extra pounds, the vanity, and my health that are at stake. It is my testimony. God humbled me with this truth, and I wanted to share it with you. I’m certainly not here to share any diet and exercise tips. He knows that would be a joke and a half. We all have different stories or different insecurities. Or, maybe yours are the same as mine. Whatever the circumstance, I believe sharing is key to our healing.

{No makeup? Who cares!}

What are you insecure about?

It’s amazing what can change when you simply care what God thinks rather than what the world thinks! Let’s look at what the Bible says about being overweight:

  • “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” 1 Corinthians 10:13
  • “Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” 1 John 4:4
  • “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13

Were you expecting verses on gluttony and self-control? Not here. Friend, you are an overcomer. You are strengthened by Him. No temptation will be too strong for the One that is in you!

What are you insecure about today? Feel free to share your heart in the comments. We are all friends here!
