Christmas in NYC – Part 2

Hey, hey! Today I am sharing Part 2 of our Christmas trip to New York City! If you missed Part 1, you can find it here. Let’s get started!

This day was probably my favorite of the trip because we experienced some of those “bucket list” activities. I’ve always wanted to see the Rockefeller Tree lit up and decorated for Christmas, but what I really wanted to do was under that tree…

We first stopped and tried to be silly tourists in the crowd of the Today Show. My dad didn’t see us, but some ladies from my hometown of Hattiesburg were actually featured. Figures! From there we finally…

Went ice skating under the tree! Nothing is more magical and Christmasy than ice skating under the beautiful Rockefeller Tree!

For 4, he’s had some amazing adventures. I think he ice skated three times in 2023. Not bad for a Mississippi boy!

Of course we had to visit the Lego store in Rockefeller Center as well.

And we were also able to see the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall. Everyone needs to see this! Not only is it such a beautiful show, I will always be able to say I was there when the camel misbehaved and was galloping (do camels gallop?) around the nativity.

We headed back to the hotel and got ready for dinner at Sarabeth’s in Central Park.

On day four, Liam and I went to the 9/11 memorial. He had seen videos of the planes flying into the Twin Towers and wanted to see Ground Zero for himself. I had been to the memorial before, but since he seemed genuinely interested, I bought our tickets.

If you’re ever in NYC, I consider Ground Zero a must-see.

We had a picnic lunch in Central Park…

and then we stopped by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Liam has no idea what he’s standing in front of, but yes, that’s the real Monet.

Our only spontaneous adventure on the trip was decided this morning. My STEM/NASA loving future engineer wanted to go see the retired space shuttle that is on Manhattan. We took a little trip over to the USS Intrepid. It is a battleship, submarine, and space shuttle museum all in one.

The sweet folks there actually let him turn the helm of the battleship. Such a cool memory for him.

The Intrepid serviced several Mercury and Gemini water landings, so there is a real connection to the space program. Many of the original astronauts were picked up by this vessel upon landing. This is a Gemini training capsule now on board the ship to mark that relationship.

Unfortunately, day five arrived, and we had our chauffer take us back to the airport. I cannot say enough good things about our drivers and the company.

I got suckered into buying him a chocolate cake for lunch. When in Rome, right?

And of course, Mr. Personality entertained everyone on the flight home with his shadow puppet show!

I am so thankful I had the opportunity to share this time with Liam. Don’t be afraid to take adventures with your children, even if you’re solo parenting like me. The only trip you’ll regret is the one you didn’t take.
